About Us

Financial tools built on honesty.

Sensible Money Tools was created with a simple belief: everyone deserves access to sophisticated financial calculators without giving up their data, paying a subscription, or sitting through a sales pitch.

Our Mission

Make financial clarity accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford a financial advisor.

The gap between those who understand money and those who don't is one of the most consequential inequalities in modern life. We're not solving that gap entirely, but we are giving everyone the same tools that sophisticated investors and financial planners use every day.

What We Stand For

Our core values

Privacy First

We never collect, store, or sell your financial data. Every calculation happens entirely in your browser. When you close the tab, your numbers are gone unless you choose to save them.

Always Free

Every tool on Sensible Money Tools is completely free to use. No paywalls, no premium tiers, no credit card required to access any calculator or feature.

Built for Accuracy

Our algorithms are built on real financial math, ranging from Net Organic Value scoring for credit cards to amortization schedules that match bank calculations.

Canada & USA

We serve both Canadian and American users with region-specific tools, localized credit card databases, and mortgage calculations that reflect each country's lending environment.

No Sign-Up Required

Start using any tool immediately. We believe financial clarity shouldn't require creating an account or handing over your email address.

Genuinely Independent

Our rankings and recommendations are driven by math, not marketing budgets. While we earn revenue from advertising, it never influences how we rank financial products.

What We've Built

Eight tools. One goal.

Each tool is built independently but designed to work together as a complete personal finance picture.

01

Credit Card Optimizer

Analyzes 80+ US and Canadian credit cards using your actual spending patterns. Factors in transfer partner valuations, statement credits, conditional bonuses, and lifestyle filters like Costco membership or Rogers/Fido subscriptions.

02

Cash Flow Planner

Projects your monthly financial picture up to 3 years forward. Add recurring income and expenses, model debt payoff timelines, and plan for one-time events like property tax, bonuses, or vacations.

03

Budget Planner

Zero-based budgeting made simple. Allocate every dollar of your income across customizable categories, build sinking funds for future goals, and download a formatted spreadsheet to keep working offline.

04

Mortgage Calculator

Full amortization modelling for mortgages, personal loans, and auto loans. Model extra annual payments and lump-sum payoffs to see exactly how much interest you save and how many years you shave off.

05

TFSA Contribution Room Calculator

Works out your TFSA room from your own records: CRA annual limits since 2009, dated contributions and withdrawals, withdrawals added back the next January, and month-by-month over-contribution penalties.

06

RRSP & FHSA Refund Calculator

Shows the tax refund from an RRSP or FHSA contribution in every province and territory for 2026, your marginal rate before and after, and the real cost of contributing. Checked against CRA's payroll deductions calculator.

07

Take-Home Pay Calculator

Your 2026 salary after federal and provincial tax, CPP or QPP, EI and QPIP, per year and per paycheque, with a side-by-side comparison of all 13 provinces and territories.

08

Retirement Calculator

Projects retirement savings across Canadian (RRSP, TFSA, CPP, OAS) and US (401(k), IRA, Social Security) accounts, including employer matching and tax-aware drawdowns.

Transparency

How we keep the lights on

Sensible Money Tools is free because we earn revenue in two ways: Google AdSense display advertising and affiliate referral fees when users click "Get Started" on credit card listings and subsequently apply.

We want to be direct about this: when you apply for a credit card through a link on our site, we may receive a referral fee from the card issuer. This is how most financial comparison sites operate. The difference is that our rankings are determined entirely by math(specifically, our Net Organic Value algorithm) rather than which card pays the highest referral fee.

Advertisers cannot pay to rank higher in our results. If a no-fee card from a bank that pays us nothing outperforms a premium card from a bank that pays us significantly, the no-fee card ranks higher. That's a promise we take seriously.

Founder & Product

Built Sensible Money Tools to solve a real problem: most financial calculators online are either too simple to be useful or too complex to be trusted. We wanted something in between, combining sophisticated math with a clean, honest interface.

Data & Algorithms

Our credit card database is maintained manually and updated regularly. Earn rates, annual fees, welcome bonuses, and statement credits are verified against each issuer's official product pages.

Design Philosophy

Every interface decision is made with one question in mind: does this help the user make a better financial decision? We favour clarity over features, and honest results over flattering ones.
